Drive-thru Day

In our household, April 2 will now be known as drive-thru day.

We drove to the Phoenix airport to switch out rental cars. The drive was amazing; we went from 4350 feet to 1,086 feet. When we reached an elevation of 3200 feet, the flora changed. We started seeing saguaro cacti which don’t grow in Sedona https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saguaro

We drove around Tempe mostly to see the campus of Arizona State; it was deserted except for a few people getting take-out and running along the Salt River. ASU is an enormous school. We talked about which universities would be best for each kid; the kids started thinking about where and what they would like to study. These were interesting conversations and an extension of them expressing their interests at the bookstore in Boulder.

For lunch, we drove through Popeye’s, by special request, and ‘Del Taco’ a regional American-style Mexican cuisine chain. We then picked up carry out at Rio del Taco. After switching out rental cars at the airport, we got McDonald’s, Starbuck’s and Taco Bell.

I generally dislike drive-thru’s, but under the circumstances, they are very helpful and are keeping people employed and businesses open. Maybe the increased use of drive-thru service will spur the discontinued use of plastic and move toward biodegradable materials in packaging.

I looked it up and ‘thru’ is only acceptable when writing informally or when referring to a take-out service that allows one to stay in the car.

Fun fact about Arizona: the state one of the highest average elevations of the entire US, with an average of 4,100 feet (1250 m) because of all the mountains.
