Cabo Say Lucas is where the Peninsula of Baja California ends and the exact location where the Pacific Ocean meets the Gulf of California (or Sea of Cortés, as it’s known in Mexico). This junction is the unique Cabo San Lucas Arch, a rock formation; it represents the meeting of the sea and the mountain desert. People know it as the end of the earth or ‘Finisterra.’ Here is the family swimming at the nearby beach.

The drop from the beach is severe; that’s why those big boats in the background can get so close. Also the Sea of Cortés is known for deep sea fishing and many endemic fish varieties.
December through April is whale migration season. We are fortunate to be staying in the mountains near the beach on the pacific side and can see whales breaching from our balcony and the beach. It’s easy to spot the spout even from a great distance. Sighting the spout gives you a few minutes to lift the binoculars and glimpse the breach or a tail flip. The main species sighted are the humpback whales.
